Description

PMID:39719704 identified dark microglia as a distinct ultrastructurally-defined microglia subset linked to pathological synapse loss in AD. However, what distinguishes dark microglia ultrastructurally from disease-associated microglia (DAM), what transcriptionally defines this state (beyond ISR activation), and whether dark microglia are a cause or consequence of synaptic pathology requires investigation.
