The study shows plasma p-tau217 (systemic tau phosphorylation) and tau-PET (regional brain tau aggregation) have nearly identical predictive power for cognitive decline. The biological mechanisms explaining this equivalence between peripheral and central tau measures are unclear, which limits understanding of tau pathophysiology progression.
