What resolves this contention: Whether the mouse cortico-cortical network can be summarized by a single hierarchy at all: Harris et al. fit a coherent (if shallow) hierarchy using FF/FB axon-termination labels, whereas the D'Souza et al. laminar/beta-regression analysis emphasizes that the same data contain large nonhierarchical motifs embedded within the hierarchy, with hierarchy depth depending on the subnetwork (dorsal vs ventral). / Our results show that cell-class-specific connections are organized in a shallow hierarchy within the mouse corticothalamic network. / Beta regression analyses, which estimate a continuous hierarchical distance measure, indicate that the network comprises multiple nonhierarchical circuits embedded in a hierarchical organization of overlapping levels.
