What resolves this contention: Briscoe & Ragsdale identify deep-layer-like glutamatergic cell types in avian/alligator pallium homologous to mammalian neocortical neurons, supporting cell-type-level homology of pallial circuitry, whereas Belgard et al.'s pallial transcriptomes fail to support predicted homologies between chicken and mouse pallial sectors based on classical anatomical/connectional models. / Gene expression experiments established that the mesopallium, but not the nidopallium, shares a transcription factor network with the intratelencephalic class of neocortical neurons, which are found in neocortical layers 2, 3, 5 and 6. / Our study demonstrates transcriptomic divergence, plausible convergence, and, in two exceptional cases, conservation between specialized avian and mammalian telencephalic regions.
