What resolves this contention: Whether the perceptually-relevant L5 apical-dendrite mechanism in S1 is a global L5 phenomenon (Takahashi 2016) or restricted to the PT subclass (Takahashi 2020). The 2020 result effectively reinterprets the 2016 finding as PT-specific. / Activity in apical dendrites of L5 pyramidal neurons in mouse S1 (treated as one population) correlates with and causally controls perceptual threshold for whisker deflections. / Apical-dendrite activity of subcortically-projecting (PT) L5 neurons almost exclusively determines tactile-detection performance, whereas corticocortically-projecting (IT) L5 neurons contribute negligibly.
