What resolves this contention: Whether strong/weak synaptic properties cluster onto individual neurons. Cossell 2015 implies a 'few strong inputs from correlated neighbors' structure that should yield clustering by similarity-defined identity; Holler 2024 paired recordings in barrel cortex L2/3 explicitly fail to find within-neuron clustering of EPSP amplitudes or paired-pulse ratios. / Importantly, we found no evidence for clustering of synaptic properties on individual neurons. / Here we reveal that the strength of connections between layer 2/3 (L2/3) pyramidal neurons in mouse primary visual cortex (V1) obeys a simple rule--the few strong connections occur between neurons with most correlated responses, while only weak connections link neurons with uncorrelated responses.
