What resolves this contention: Whether striatal patch (striosome) and matrix compartments receive segregated limbic vs sensorimotor cortical inputs (classical view, supported by 2018 striosome-map data) or instead share both limbic and sensorimotor inputs (Crittenden 2016 with cell-type-specific viral tracing). / Contrary to previous studies, results show patch/exo-patch and matrix neurons receive both limbic and sensorimotor information. / This striosome-free space was located at the dorsolateral region and received afferents preferentially from the primary motor and sensory cortices, whereas the striosome-rich part received afferents from associational/limbic cortices, with topography inside both innervations.
