What resolves this contention: Apparent tension over whether long-range CT/corticocortical inputs drive L5B PT (corticospinal) targets — local M1 CT→PT excitation is reported as nearly absent (Kiritani 2015) while long-range M2→M1 inputs onto L5B corticospinal cells are strong; depending on whether 'corticospinal' is treated as PT or a separate IT-like subclass, the wiring story for PT-class targeting differs. / There was strikingly little CT↔ PT excitatory connectivity. / In forelimb M1 brain slices, recordings from layer (L)5B corticospinal neurons during brief photostimulation of M2 axons showed strong monosynaptic excitatory currents that, although accompanied by potent feedforward inhibitory currents, were capable of evoking action potentials (APs) in most neurons.
