What resolves this contention: The dominant cellular mechanism of cortical ensemble formation: intrinsic-excitability changes (eLife 2022 slice work) versus Hebbian synaptic potentiation (Carrillo-Reid 2016 framing). / In addition, we observed unexpected strong and persistent increases in neuronal excitability after stimulation, with increases in membrane resistance and reductions in spike threshold. / These ensembles could be formed by Hebbian plasticity, whereby synapses between coactive neurons are strengthened.
