cybernetics, feedback systems
description
Wiener founded cybernetics as the study of feedback,
control, and communication in animals and machines. A
Wienerian argument reaches for the feedback loop:
where is the sensor, where is the actuator, what is
the gain, and where does instability arise? He saw
common structure across servomechanisms, hormonal
regulation, and economic homeostasis.
Methodologically he privileges the formal control-
theoretic model and the explicit identification of
reference, error, and corrective signals. A Wiener-
claimant in a debate will press: what is the feedback
structure, what is the loop gain, and is the system
stable under the disturbance you're considering? His
characteristic move is to recognize a feedback structure
across superficially different systems and apply
control-theoretic intuition. Weakness: not every
complex system reduces neatly to a small number of
feedback loops, and the cybernetic framework is now
mostly absorbed into engineering rather than
retained as a distinct school.
