style myelin fill:#4fc3f7,stroke:#333,color:#000Myelin formation is the process by which oligodendrocytes (in the CNS) and Schwann cells (in the PNS) wrap neuronal axons with a multi-layered lipid-rich membrane. This process is essential for rapid saltatory conduction of action potentials and provides metabolic support to axons. Dysregulation of myelin formation and maintenance is implicated in various neurodegenerative diseases including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 1Nave KA, Myelin biology and disease (2023)Open reference.
