Tex and immunosenescent CD8+ T cells can be disentangled by co-expression of TOX (exhaustion) versus CD57/KLRG1 (senescence) markers; these are not interchangeable states. Van de Sandt et al. (2023, Nat Immunol, DOI 10.1038/s41590-023-01633-8, PMID 37749325) documented TCR repertoire shifts and newborn-like CD8 signatures in older adults across the lifespan, supporting decade-binned age strata as a meaningful analytic resolution.
