What resolves this contention: Disagreement over whether a like-to-like rule is sufficient to describe E→E connectivity/influence in mouse visual cortex. The connectomic (EM) analysis supports universal like-to-like, while large-scale all-optical perturbation finds a deep-L2/3 SST population that responds to diverse, non-like-tuned ensembles. / Our results reveal that neurons with similar response properties are preferentially connected within and across layers and areas-including feedback connections-supporting the universality of 'like-to-like' connectivity across the visual hierarchy. / Tracking population responses following delivery of precisely-defined widely-distributed activity patterns to the visual cortex of awake mice, we were surprised to identify neurons robustly responsive to stimulation of diverse ensembles, defying conventional like-to-like wiring rules.
