Abstract

Martínez-Cué and Rueda review evidence linking cellular senescence to neurodegeneration. Senescent glial cells, including microglia and astrocytes, accumulate in aged and diseased brains. Their SASP promotes chronic neuroinflammation and disrupts the neurovascular unit. Senolytic therapies show promise in clearing senescent glia and improving cognitive outcomes in animal models.
