PMID:10.1101/2024.10.30.621160 identified retinal microglia-derived S100A9 activating NLRP3 inflammasome in obese pig retina. S100A9 is also elevated in AD brains. Whether retinal S100A9-NLRP3 signaling reflects or drives brain neurodegeneration, and whether the eye can serve as a window to CNS neuroinflammation via microglia-derived DAMPs is an unresolved mechanistic question.
