Cortical ChAT-VIP interneurons (a small subset of the VIP class co-expressing choline acetyltransferase and the vesicular ACh transporter SLC18A3) directly *excite* neighboring L1–L3 interneurons and L2/3 + L6 pyramidal cells through fast cholinergic synaptic transmission, in stark contrast to regular VIP cells which disinhibit pyramidal neurons by suppressing SST cells — making ChAT-VIP a functionally distinct VIP sub-class with its own intrinsic-physiology + behavioral role.
