In human fetal forebrain, secretagogin (SCGN)-expressing cortical GABAergic precursors arise from multiple subpallial origins (CGE, LGE, septum and preoptic area), are largely SP8+ and LHX6-negative, and migrate via diverse routes into neocortex, insular cortex, olfactory cortex and olfactory bulbs. By 19 post-conceptional weeks, SCGN is expressed in 58% of cortical-wall DLX2+ GABAergic neurons — a higher proportion than calretinin, identifying SCGN as a major marker of human (but not mouse) CGE/LGE-derived cortical INs.
