In mouse somatosensory cortex (S1), the activation of apical dendrites in L5 pyramidal subcerebrally-projecting (PT) neurons — but not in their cortico-cortically-projecting (IT) neighbors — almost exclusively determines the detection threshold for tactile stimuli, demonstrating that dendritic Ca²⁺ activation in the PT subclass is the causal link between cortex and perception via descending interactions with higher-order thalamus, superior colliculus and striatum.
